SUPPLEMENTS ON A VEGAN DIET
Updated: Sep 19, 2019
The number one concern of people who are transitioning to a vegan/plant-based diet is deficiencies. So the question of wether it is necessary to take supplements or not will be discussed in this post.
My simple answer to this question is YES, I recommend taking following 4 Supplements:
Omega 3 (DHA, EPA)
Important to mention here is the fact that this recommendation is not only for people on a vegan diet but also for people on an omnivorous diet.
There are certain micro nutrients wich aren't available in our food however are essential for our bodies. Vitamin D for an example is produced in our skin with the help of sunlight. There are some factors which inhibit Vitamin D production like the amount of sunlight, air pollution etc.
Vitamin B12 on the other hand is produced by bacteria which are found in our soil. Due to our high hygienic standards most of the soil (dirt) is removed from the food we eat which means our food doesn't contain any B12 anymore. Opposed to the public opinion that B12 only comes with animal products is simply wrong. Even animals who are not exposed to fresh grass and therefore B12 containing soil are given B12 supplements.
